Owls are going to feature quite heavily, though not exclusively, over the next few pages.

I took this shot on the left shortly after taking the dawn landscape on the front page. The sun had by now just risen and the owl was preparing to hunt.

I watched this barn owl hunt for about 2 hours before it returned to its roost. I didn't see it take prey in this time.

Different owl, location and day. It's interesting that none of my owl shots show ringed birds as I know the Hawk and Owl Trust regularly monitor and ring barnies.

That makes me feel hopeful that there are many more birds than we can account for.

This shot was taken, like most of my owl shots, in the last hour of light. This is challenging (photographically speaking) but it can give the most beautiful golden glow.

An absolutely stunning bird.

In my photography, I try to capture behaviour and environment. I rarely like to make simple record or identification style portraits. And if I can capture the light as well... perfect.

Here, I've actually converted the image to a sepia toned monochrome. It is very unusual for me to shoot monochrome wildlife - I normally leave monochrome for landscape and people portraits.

I think it works here because of the lovely rim lighting.

And by way of contrast, here I show a similar image with the colour left in.

Though as you can see, it's still pretty much monochrome.
