Me and My Photography.

I now live in Wiltshire and spend as much time as possible out and about watching and photographing the UK's amazingly rich and diverse natural world. I'm lucky enough to live within an hours drive or so of: Salisbury Plain, the Somerset Levels, Wales, Bristol channel and Severn estuary, Hampshire, Devon, Dorset, New Forest, Forest of Dean, Exmoor, the south coast and more.

Within walking distance of my house, I regularly see little, tawny and barn owls, foxes, hares, roe and muntjack deer and woodland birds. In fact, in the summer, I often spend 3 or 4 hours "in the field" before going to or after work.

I'm fortunate enough to own a camper van and so I also spend weekends and holidays further afield: I try to get to Scotland and the east coast once a year. I really should write an article about camper vans - they make a brilliant hide.

I enjoy seeking out Britain's wildlife and I spend a lot of time without camera equipment just locating and observing subjects. However, when I am out with my gear I often get approached and asked essentially 2 questions: am I a professional wildlife photographer and how big is my lens?

I am glad to say, "no I am not a professional". I do not try to make money from my hobby. I shoot those subjects that I want to shoot as opposed to what a client wants. I shoot when I want. My real job pays probably far more than I could ever earn as a photographer anyway so why spoil such a beautiful past-time? Oh, and it's 500mm!

Though I'm not looking to make a career out of photography, I do want people to see my work - hence this website. I am also thinking of producing more detailed and extensive information possibly in book or DVD form. I have been toying with the idea of giving slide-show presentations to clubs as well, though I need to get a decent digital projector before that idea gets off the ground.

Anyhow, that's enough about me. Enjoy the site and please let me know what you think. I'm open to suggestions as to how to develop and improve the content and, remember, I'm always on the lookout for good locations...

All the best,
Dean
